what you miss out.
Hi all. I remember mentioning some time ago about how one of the key elements to a successful drawing for me is what you miss out.
I was in the small town of Uffeculme recently and was struck by a tall, old shop front. I didn't have time to make a drawing so I grabbed a photo to draw from later. This is the photo.
This morning, with some time to spare, I thought I'd give drawing the building a quick go. I had to hand a half sheet of super cheap Crawford and Black mixed media paper and a fude fountain pen bought super cheap off Temu. The pen has a bend to it's nib that means you can get a nice variation in line width.
I drew this straight in pen, no pencil guide lines first. The streetlight, alarm and the trophies in the shop window had no bearing on what caught my attention about the building so they were edited out.
I also wasn't worried about straight lines. I could have drawn everything with a ruler but went with my own, naturally slightly shaky, line as it gave more character. It's a quirky 15 minute sketch that I'm really quite happy with. The lesson being just draw the bits that are relevant to you. Don't worry about missing things out.
Now go make something
Pete
